The national expenditure for research and development reached in 2002 34.2 billions euros, which represents 2.20 % of the GDP, and places France ahead of the OCDE countries. The Government target for this particular budget is to reach 3% of the GDP in 2010.
This is financed 44% by the public sector which funds the main national research centres and 56 % by companies who focus on high technology sectors (Automotive, Telecoms, Pharmaceutical, Aeronautic & Chemical)
In 2001, France had 316,000 researchers (2nd in Europe after Germany). In addition, the number of patents registered by residents was 12,068 (2nd in Europe after Germany)
R& D centres benefit from a favourable tax status. The recent set up of 400 research centres for international companies is proof of the interest they generate for the "Technopole" network and the science parks. Currently half of all European research centres are based in France.
